What Is Lacquer Paint And What Can It Be Used For?

Lacquer Paint

Understanding Lacquer Paint

When used as a paint, lacquer provides a durable and glossy finish that enhances the appearance of surfaces, particularly wood. Lacquer can be applied with spray gun, or other methods, and it dries quickly to form a hard, protective coating that is resistant to moisture, scratches, and other forms of wear and tear. It is commonly used in furniture making, kitchens, and other applications where a high-gloss, durable finish is desired, in particular wood lacquering. At Ultrimax we have a range of different lacquers available, including Polyurethane Lacquers, Acid Catalysed Lacquers and Water Based Lacquers, this guide goes into more detail about the varieties which are available on the market.

Ultrimax Acid Catalysed Lacquer

Acid Catalysed Lacquers use an acid to crosslink the paint, this means that molecules are bonded together to make a larger durable molecule. This has made them ideal to be used in kitchen environments where traffic is heavier, and a more durable finish is required.

Acid-Catalysed Paint needs an acid catalyst hardener, not using a hardener with this coating may cause issues after use and in the drying phase.

There are many advantages of Acid Catalysed Lacquers including:

  • Can be tinted to all colours – check out our Colormax service for more information.
  • Available in a range of finishes, including dead matt, satin, gloss.
  • Easy to apply and use.

Acid Catalyst products contain Formaldehyde in the resin, which is a respiratory irritant that causes chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing, nose, and throat irritation and can also cause cancer. We would recommend the use of an air fed breathing mask to be always used when spraying acid catalysed lacquers.

Sayerlack Polyurethane Clear Lacquer

Sayerlack Polyurethane Clear Lacquer offers complete transparency, good build and smoothness particularly suitable for applications that require high yellowing resistance. It requires 2K hardener for optimal build.

Polyurethane paint provides durability, resistance to chemicals, water, abrasion, and temperature, as well as an attractive glossy finish. It is a highly resistant coating and used in a variety of different joinery projects including kitchens, hardwood floors and furniture and provides an attractive glossy finish.

Polyurethane Lacquers emits odours and fumes, though they are not that highly noticeable, which can cause physical problems for the painter if correct PPE is not worn – contact us to find out which PPE would be most suitable. The hardeners also contain isocyanates which require an air fed mask when this product is sprayed.

Sayerlack Polyurethane Clear Lacquer comes in a variety of different finishes including: semi-matt, semi-gloss, matt and gloss.

Sayerlack Water Based Clear Lacquer

In an era demanding reduced environmental footprints and embracing sustainable manufacturing methods, water-based paints are increasingly establishing themselves as the norm. They pose fewer hazards compared to solvent-based coatings and boast additional advantages. While solvent-based products have historically held dominance, advancements in technology have ushered in a range of high-performance alternatives now readily available in the market.

Sayerlack presents a Water Based Clear Lacquer - low VOC content, and remarkable efficiency. The water-based lacquer presents a resilient coating that effectively withstands exposure to chemicals. Despite its initial off-white colour, it delivers a transparent finish without any yellowing over time, is favoured by those treating furniture indoors, and offers the advantage of being quick to dry.

Another advantage of water-based lacquers is that they can be cleaned with water and do not require solvent thinners. Solvents can be costly to dispose of and so water-based coatings can typically have a lower clean-up cost associated with them.
