Frequently Asked Questions
What is Fire Retardant Paint?
What is Fire Retardant Paint?
Fire retardant paint is a specialised protective coating that significantly slows down flame spread and reduces the flammability of wood surfaces. Unlike regular paint, it contains active chemical compounds that react when exposed to heat, creating a barrier that helps prevent ignition and controls fire spread rates. These coatings meet specific fire safety standards and building regulations while maintaining the natural aesthetic appeal of wood, making them essential for commercial, public, and residential applications where enhanced fire protection is required.
How Does Fire Retardant Paint Work?
How Does Fire Retardant Paint Work?
Fire retardant paint works through multiple mechanisms when exposed to heat and flames. The paint forms a protective char layer that insulates the wood surface and absorbs heat energy through endothermic chemical reactions. This multi-layered protection system significantly extends ignition time and reduces fire spread rates, providing valuable evacuation time and helping to contain fires before they can spread to other areas.
Fire Retardant Paint vs Intumescent Coatings
Fire Retardant Paint vs Intumescent Coatings
While both provide fire protection, they serve different purposes. Fire retardant paint slows ignition and reduces flame spread through chemical suppression and char formation. Intumescent coatings expand dramatically when heated (20-50 times original thickness) to create thick insulating layers, focusing on structural fire protection for critical load-bearing elements.
Is Fire Retardant Paint Toxic?
Is Fire Retardant Paint Toxic?
Our Aquimax Flameshield System exemplifies safe fire protection technology with its water-based formulation that eliminates harmful solvent emissions and features low VOC levels for minimal indoor air quality impact. This system offers reduced odour during application, safer conditions for paint sprayers and meets stringent environmental standards. While proper ventilation during application is recommended, cured water-based coatings like Aquimax Flameshield are safe for normal building occupancy and demonstrate our commitment to effective fire protection without compromising health and environmental safety.
Why Fire Retardant Coatings Matter
Why Fire Retardant Coatings Matter
Fire retardant coatings are essential for comprehensive fire safety, providing critical evacuation time by slowing fire spread and reducing smoke production. They protect both lives and property while ensuring compliance with building regulations. If you have any questions about our Fire Retardant range, please contact us for more information.
