You might even be able to say it (We can't ) but do you know what Intumescent paint actually is? Check out the video below for a quick breadown.
It's basically a fancy word for swelling. When fire interacts with the surface the paint expands up to 50 times its original thickness to form a carbon layer, or char, that prevents oxygen from reaching the substrate for a given period. This doesn't stop the flame from spreading or puts ut the fire but it does radically slow down the fire and that extra time might just be crucial. Whether it gives humans more time to get out of the building or keeps the integrity of say a steel beam in check for 90mintes longer than without protection could literally be the difference between life and death when fire is involved.
Intumescent paint thermally insulates structural materials such as steel, timber and plaster to prevent the premature collapse of a building in the event of a fire. It's the most widely used method of fire protection for steel structures because it's cheaper to use, easy to apply and readily available.
During a fire, unprotected steelwork can lose its load-bearing capacity within minutes. Coating with a suitable reactive paint gives 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes of protection, depending on the product.
We recommend using Jotun Steelmaster 600WF - a water-based acrylic film that offers up to 90 minutes of fire protection. You can use it as a mid-coat or finish coat in low atmospheric environments.

Intumescent paints only provide their stated level of protection and meet building regulation standards when applied correctly and to the correct film thickness. So, make sure you adhere to the manufacturer's drying times and application thickness requirements to prevent the film from failing.
Use a Wet Film Thickness Paint Comb to ensure you are applying the paint to the correct thickness.
