Single Pack Spray Paint vs 2K Spray Paints (Video)

Whats the difference between single pack spray paints and two-pack (2K) spray paint? Most people will just say that for 2K spray paint you need to mix a hardener with the paint for it to cure, that is correct, however there is also quite a few other differences that you will need to bear in mind when deciding which paint to go for. Watch the video below to find out more.

1-Pack or Alkyd Paints

These react with the oxygen in the air to form a durable enamel film, without having to add a hardener. They're cheaper than other coatings, safe, convenient and easy to use. You can also apply them over any primer.

Drawbacks to Consider

  • Not as resistant to chemicals or abrasion and less durable than 2-pack alternatives
  • Longer drying times and will need an extra heating source in winter
  • Gloss and colour retention not as good as some 2-pack alternatives

2K Spray Paint

These products contain two parts that you mix before application. The chemical reaction between the components creates a hard finish that's resistant to abrasion, alkali, acids, and water.

Ultrithane 31 2K Spray Paint in use

Advantages of 2K Paint

  • Incredibly hard wearing
  • Very high chemical resistance
  • Typically used on steel or concrete

Disadvantages of 2K Paint

  • Application time - due to the mixing of the hardener application time can be slower than single-pack paints
  • Health and Safety hazards - 2-pack paints are highly flammable and some contain isocyanates, which are the main cause of occupational asthma in the UK. Make sure you wear suitable PPE and set your spray booth up correctly.
  • Poor UV stability
  • Some 2-pack paints have a short pot life once mixed
