How to pick the correct floor paint for a project

Whether you're building a new facility or renovating an existing one, it is important to ensure that the flooring will withstand the daily demands of your industry. That means you will need to determine the type of floor paint best suited to keep up with your facility operations. Yet with so many options available it can be difficult to know where to start.

Floor Paint Guide

Our team at Ultrimax Coatings have put together a step by step guide to help you select the best floor coating for your project:

1. Determine the needs of your facility

First things first, you need to consider the requirements of your facility and conditions under which the floor paint needs to perform. By doing so you will begin to understand the necessary floor coating features required. Ask yourself whether your flooring is in an area which is subject to high levels of chemical exposure and corrosive spills. Does your facility flooring need to resist the use of heavy machinery or will the primary use be subject to foot traffic only? Will the floors need to withstand extreme temperatures?

Flormax Floor Paint

At Ultrimax Coatings, we have developed Flormax floor paint, a high industrial grade floor coating that provides excellent coverage for warehouses, garages, factories and showrooms. Flormax uses new resin technology to provide facility flooring with unbeatable and long-lasting protection.

Additional Floor Paint Protection

If you're looking for more than just paint and concerned about slip, trips and falls then the addition of Flormax Anti-skid aggregate may help. Anti-skid is made up of Aluminium oxide particles that can be added to the final floor paint coating. These particles act as resistance to foot or wheeled traffic and provide an anti-skid surface. If you are unsure about the requirements of your facility it is best to seek professional advice. You can do this by arranging for a surveyor to visit your facility or alternatively give us a call to discuss your options with one of our experts.

2. Consider the type of flooring

Many floorings are made of concrete, hardwood, steel or a combination. You need to choose a coating suitable for the flooring material it will cover. Many concrete surfaces can contain moisture and therefore enamel floor coatings are too vulnerable to use. Flormax floor paint can be easily applied to a variety of floor surfaces including concrete, steel and timber. You should also take into account whether or not the flooring has any existing treatments still present on the surface. Even though you may require a floor coating suitable for a hardwood floor, the remaining floor coating may alter the choice of new coverage necessary.

Industrial Floor Paint for Concrete

If your facility has concrete flooring you will need to carry out a moisture test. Concrete is a porous material which can often retain large amounts of moisture. This can lead to water vapour from the soil below your facility to slowly rise into your facility. What's more, increased moisture can cause some coatings to blister in less than a week of laying. By testing your concrete for moisture you will be able to determine the problems you may encounter and choose a suitable floor coating. Completing such a test can give you insight as to how you can prevent any issues developing and potentially save you money over time.

3. Make sure it is installed by a professional

After taking the time to decide which floor coating to use, the last thing you want to do is waste your money and time by installing it incorrectly. Floor coating is an investment and you should seek professional advice and service to ensure it is installed correctly. Floor coating should not be mistaken for regular paints. Often floor coating requires specialist techniques for installation depending on the type of coverage, the condition of the flooring and the surface material.

4. Research, research, research!

When it comes to choosing the correct floor coating for your facility, thorough research will provide you with the knowledge and insight tailored to your requirements. The more you research and understand the different kinds of floor coatings available, the more likely you are to choose the correct one and prevent unnecessary additional expenditure in the long run. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all when it comes to floor coatings, and whilst some products like our Flormax floor coating aim to cover most needs, it is best to carefully consider your facility's needs before purchasing. Once you have found the best type of floor coating for your facility, it is a good idea to consider the other costs involved in painting your flooring. You should take into account the cost and time required to install the floor coating. If you are an existing facility this may affect your production schedule, and subsequently incur further costs. You should also make sure you understand how to clean and care for your chosen floor coating. If you have carefully chosen, the correct type of floor coating it should work as an investment for your facility. Unnecessary replacements due to poor selection, installation and maintenance don't need to happen.
