They let you check against a job you did and ensure you are rematching to the same colour, they help you keep a record fo the spray out so that you can show the original test colour against the colour that is on your customers vehcile, plant,machinery or furniture. They let you keep everything organised with the handy contact and holder system and they even let you test the coverage of sprays, the in-built checquer board design means you can see how many primer and topcoat layers you need before full coverage is created.

The metal variety is widely regarded as more robust than the card variant and provides a more true to life finish compared to your real life project. They are also superior if you are checking if a paint covers well, because the metal surface provideds a more realistic view of how the final job will look.
