Tunnel Ovens

Tunnel ovens, or powder coating ovens, are a type of industrial curing system. Using convection, industrial tunnel ovens allow for the fast curing of powder coated pieces – these ovens operate at typically 180 – 250 degrees Celsius - for a curing time that can be completed in as little as 10 minutes, depending on the size of the piece or product.

Tunnel ovens are available in a variety of sizes and configurations to meet the specific needs of your powder coating operation. So, as with any piece of specified industrial equipment, finding the right unit for the job is vital. Ultrimax can help – read on for more on our tunnel ovens, and how to find the right one for your workspace, and your project.

What are tunnel ovens and what are they used for?

Tunnel ovens are large industrial ovens that are used to cure powder coated products. These ovens typically have a conveyor system that moves the product through the heated chamber, allowing for even heating and curing of the powder coating. The heating of the chamber is done via electrical means, liquid fuel or gas, depending on the type and size of the oven, and controlled by a digital temperature gauge and thermostat. Ventilated air, created by fans, is moved through the tunnel, to ensure an even distribution of heat, and so the fast and consistent curing of the pieces in the heating chamber.

Powder coating ovens – What to look out for

If you are looking for a tunnel oven for your powder coating operation, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Unit size and what needs to be cured

First, consider the size of the unit. Tunnel ovens are available in a variety of widths and lengths to accommodate different powder coating operations. The width of the unit will determine the maximum width of the product that can be processed, while the length of the unit will determine the maximum line speed.

And then of course, know the type of products you will be baking or curing. Specific products cure differently, according to a number of factors, so the right powder coating ovens should be used for the correct jobs, for best results.

The ideal tunnel ovens for your purpose

Second, consider the features and options that are available on different models. The tunnel oven is an ideal addition to your spray line. Here’s why:

  • Tunnel ovens are open-ended, so in an automated spray line, product can be taken straight to the tunnel oven, to be cured at high temperatures
  • Tunnel ovens use recycled air that’s recirculated within the oven, to reduce curing times across the board
  • Reduced drying times are ideal for businesses with paint lines in constant operation – quicker drying means faster output

How many types of industrial tunnel ovens are there?

The tunnel oven comes in two categories, direct gas fired, and indirect gas fired.

  • Direct gas fired – this type cures products using zoned temperature controls that even-out the heat, to regulate the heating chambers.
  • Indirect gas fired – this type cures products using the ambient heat that comes from burners firing into strategically placed combustion chambers.

What are the benefits of using a tunnel oven for spray painting?

There are a range of benefits that come from using tunnel ovens in your curing process. These include:

  • Decreased curing times for high output, and lowered costs
